When Looking Like a Jack-O’-Lantern Is Part of the Glow-Up

Why fall is one of my favorite times for CoolPeel CO₂ + VYBE RF Microneedling

Fall means cooler weather, pumpkin patches, Halloween candy…and, in my office, laser season.

It’s the time of year when patients start asking about the treatments they’ve been putting off all summer—especially resurfacing treatments that come with a little redness, swelling, peeling, or downtime.

And if you’ve ever seen someone a day or two after combining CoolPeel CO₂ with VYBE RF Microneedling, you may understand why I consider October the perfect month for it.

You might be a little red.

You might be a little puffy.

You may wake up, look in the mirror, and think:

“Why do I look like a jack-o’-lantern?”

Perfect. It’s spooky season anyway.

But underneath that temporary swelling is a treatment combination designed to address some of the skin concerns patients ask me about most: texture, fine lines, acne scarring, pores, skin laxity, and overall skin quality.

Let’s talk about what we're actually doing to your skin—and why the temporary “swollen monster” phase can be worth it.

First: What Is CoolPeel CO₂?

CoolPeel is a fractional CO₂ laser treatment.

CO₂ lasers have been used for years for skin resurfacing because they create controlled microscopic injury within the skin, triggering the body's natural healing response and stimulating new collagen.

CoolPeel allows us to deliver fractional CO₂ energy in a way designed to limit unnecessary heat exposure to surrounding tissue.

In simple terms?

We create tiny controlled treatment zones in the skin so your body gets the message: “Time to repair and rebuild.”

CoolPeel can be used to improve concerns such as:

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven texture

  • Enlarged pores

  • Sun damage

  • Acne scarring

  • Overall skin quality

But sometimes resurfacing the surface isn't the only thing we want to accomplish.

That's where VYBE comes in.

Enter VYBE RF Microneedling

VYBE combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy.

Tiny needles enter the skin at controlled depths while RF energy is delivered into the tissue.

That means we're working deeper than a surface resurfacing treatment alone.

The controlled injury and heat generated in the dermis stimulate the skin's natural remodeling response, including collagen and elastin production.

Depending on the patient's goals, RF microneedling can be useful for concerns such as:

  • Skin laxity

  • Acne scars

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven texture

  • Enlarged pores

  • Crepey skin

  • Overall firmness

So when we combine CoolPeel + VYBE, we're approaching skin rejuvenation from two different levels.

Think: CoolPeel = resurfacing.VYBE = deeper remodeling.

Your skin gets a little homework.

But Why Do I Look Like a Pumpkin?

Because inflammation is part of the healing process.

After treatment, it's normal to experience some degree of redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling.

And when we combine modalities, swelling may be more noticeable than with a lighter treatment alone.

Some patients barely swell.

Other patients wake up the next morning looking like they spent the night auditioning to be a Halloween decoration.

Your cheeks may look extra full.

Your under-eyes may be puffy.

Your face might feel tight.

You may look in the mirror and suddenly understand why I warned you not to schedule family pictures the following day.

Welcome to your temporary jack-o’-lantern era. 🎃

The important thing to understand is that downtime varies from person to person and depends on treatment settings, skin sensitivity, the areas treated, and the intensity of the procedure.

That's why we talk about your schedule before treatment.

Have a wedding Saturday?

This probably isn't the Friday afternoon appointment I would recommend.

Planning to spend the weekend on the couch watching scary movies?

Now we're talking.

Then Comes the “What Is My Skin Doing?” Phase

After fractional resurfacing, skin may feel dry, rough, or sandpapery as it heals.

You may notice redness or a bronzed appearance.

Tiny treatment areas can become more visible before gradually shedding.

The key is:

Do. Not. Pick. Your skin is healing.

This is not the week to introduce six new skincare products, exfoliate aggressively, or decide that your Clarisonic deserves a comeback tour.

Your post-treatment routine will usually be intentionally boring.

Gentle cleansing.

Recommended moisturizer or healing products.

Sun protection.

And leaving your skin alone.

Boring skincare during recovery = happy skin.

Why Fall Is My Favorite Time for This Treatment

Technically, skin treatments don't know what month it is. But your sun exposure does.

During fall and winter, most of us naturally spend less time at the pool, lake, beach, sporting events, and other activities involving hours of direct sun.

That makes it easier to protect freshly treated skin.

And there is another advantage:

Holiday timing.

October is a great month to begin treatments if you're thinking ahead to Thanksgiving parties, Christmas photos, holiday events, and New Year's.

Collagen remodeling isn't instant.

Your skin continues changing after treatment as healing and collagen production occur.

So rather than calling the week before your Christmas party asking:

“Can you laser me so I look perfect Saturday?”

Think ahead.

our December skin starts in October.

Is More Aggressive Always Better?

No. This is something I talk about frequently in aesthetics.

Patients sometimes assume:

More energy + more passes + more redness = better results.

Not necessarily.

The goal is not to see how angry we can make your skin.

Your treatment should be based on your skin type, concerns, medical history, previous treatments, tolerance for downtime, and goals.

Some patients may benefit from combination treatment.

Others may be better candidates for CoolPeel alone, RF microneedling alone, or an entirely different treatment plan.

Good aesthetic medicine is individualized.

Your Halloween Costume May Be “Slightly Swollen Patient”—But It’s Temporary

I joke with patients because, sometimes, aesthetic treatments look a little worse before they look better.

That's normal.

You may leave looking pink.

You may swell.

You may spend a few days looking like a very expensive jack-o’-lantern.

But there's a reason we're creating that controlled response.

We're asking your skin to repair, remodel, and regenerate.

So if you've been thinking about addressing acne scarring, texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, or overall skin quality, spooky season might actually be your season.

Come get a little red.

Get a little puffy.

Hide under a blanket with a pumpkin spice latte for the weekend.

And let your skin do the work.

Because sometimes the glow-up starts with looking just a little bit scary first. 🎃
